Adult:

Osteopathic treatment aims not only to alleviate symptoms but also to enhance overall body function. Patients frequently report improvements in general well-being, including increased energy levels, better sleep patterns, and relief in other unreported symptoms. Reactions to treatment can vary, with some patients initially feeling worse as their body undergoes a healing process, which can last up to five days. Deep-seated issues may even trigger a 'healing crisis' until a subsequent treatment can be administered. These reactions might include a worsening of symptoms, emotional responses, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, soreness, bruising, nausea, headaches, increased urination or bowel movements, localized pain, or a temporary worsening in mental state. I am always available to help the patient navigate this response.

The number of treatment sessions required depends on the severity of the problem, typically ranging from 2 to 6 sessions. In my 27 years of experience, significant improvement or recovery usually occurs within three treatments on average. Occasionally, a single appointment may suffice, allowing for immediate discharge. Not everyone requires a full course of treatment. If a treatment plan is recommended and you cancel after one session due to feeling worse, you might be missing the chance to heal a deep-rooted trauma.

Initially, osteopathic treatment is usually conducted weekly, ideally with intervals of 5-10 days between appointments. Maintenance treatments may be suggested after the initial course, typically every 2-4 months depending upon lifestyle.

Relapses of the initial problem are common in cases with a chronic history or a lifestyle that exacerbates the issue. Symptom recurrence may also occur due to injuries, infections, ongoing stress, psychotherapy sessions, emotional disturbances, and food intolerances. Advice will be provided to help prevent recurrence.

When improvement occurs, it may sometimes be perceived as coincidental or even as a miraculous or magical change.

If you have any concerns or questions following your treatment, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will be happy to discuss any issues that arise after a treatment session.

Child:

Reactions to treatment can be variable. It is not unusual to find that the baby or child is very relaxed afterwards and sleeps well. Others have a burst of energy after treatment, usually followed by a good nights sleep. Others may not seem any different.

Occasionally children are unsettled after treatment. This is temporary, and is usually caused when the release of the retained stresses and strains (moulding) has been incomplete. It is not always possible for all the retained moulding and compressions to be released in one treatment session, especially if it has been severe.

Sometimes following treatment a child may develop the symptoms of a cold, there may be a runny nose or wax discharged from the ears. A young child may have loose bowel movements and seem unsettled. An older child may show signs of hyperactivity.  These are temporary effects.

The number of treatment sessions that are necessary can vary, but is usually between 2 and 6, depending on the severity of the underlying problems and the symptoms a child is experiencing. On the other hand your child may not require treatment and will be discharged at their first appointment.  Recurrence of previous problems may develop after vaccinations, injury, viruses and large growth spurts.
